city walks

the palaces of munich

Nymphenburg Palace

The 100-year vision of the Franco-Bavarian monarchy.

To celebrate the birth of the heir to their throne, the Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife, Henriette Adelaide de Savoie, had this summer residence built by the Italian architect Barelli in 1664. One hundred years later the palace was finished as it can be seen today.

Lola Montez, the royal mistress - hated and adored, honoured and vilified – left her mark here, and Bavaria’s fairy tale king, Ludwig II was born here. It was in the Palace Park that he took his first steps. We follow his footsteps and discover, hidden in this English landscape garden, the miniature Rococo palace - Amalienburg, the royal baths - “Badenburg”- and much more...

The Palace of Schleissheim

In the north of Munich lies the pleasure palace, Schleissheim, a place of retreat for the Bavarian court in the 18th century. What used to be the King’s hunting grounds is now the home of the royal portrait galleries. The hares and deer have gone, but the shine of the court remains.

The Palace of Lustheim

A Bavarian Pottery

During the baroque period the leading porcelain manufacturers were in Bavaria. The Nymphenburg manufacture produced porcelain for the whole of Europe. No wonder that a large and famous collection is to be seen in the Palace of Lustheim. The exhibition shows pieces from the Schneider Foundation. It is a must for lovers of fine porcelain.

Art à la Carte

the pinakotheks

In the heart of Munich are the three Pinakotheks (Art Galleries):

The old, the new and the modern - wallow with us in the various epochs of art!

Some like it ancient – The Old Pinakothek is home to 500 years of paintings and sculptures;

The cradle of the modern – the New Pinakothek gleams with masterpieces of the 19th and 20th centuries. Here you will find the Impressionists, the Expressionists and learn about the basics of Modern Art.

Fascinated by the 20th and 21st centuries? Then join us in the Modern Pinakothek. Opened in 2002 it is one of the world’s largest art museums, with art of the 20th and 21st centuries. It also houses collections of graphics, architecture and industrial design.

Bavaria “Behind closed doors”

The Bavarian National Museum

Whatever the question - Bavarian culture, history, the traditions of the ruling Wittelsbachs – all the answers can be found in the Bavarian National Museum.

What was the name of Ludwig II’s favourite dog? Find the quill with which he – out of love for Lola Montez - signed his renunciation of the throne.

Apart from these jewels of Bavarian history and its traditions, the museum also houses the world’s largest collection of nativity scenes.

Technology: Marvel at it, experience it! The Deutsches Museum

The Museum of Science and Technology was founded more than 100 years ago by Oskar von Müller and is home to collections from all fields of technology (mining, physics, chemistry, automobiles etc). The department of avionics is impressive, the Astro-Show a pleasure – and if you want to be amazed, visit SUSE, the first computer XXXXL.

Multi-national garden paradise

natural (the english garden)

An American planned an English garden with a Chinese pagoda and a Greek temple in Bavaria. Later a Japanese tea house was added. Today this is one of the largest public parks in Europe.

Accompany us through the green lung of Munich, past the Haus der Kunst (Art Gallery), along the Eisbach (a wild stretch of water) to the Chinese Pagoda and the Monopteros. You will experience cosmopolitanism, art and culture, naked bathers, music, horse-drawn carriages, and above all: The Munich way of life.
